2017: “A reliable St Albans stand-by” that’s “situated right by the cathedral in a lovely location” and is “a dependable fall-back for simple classics” (“steak-frites is a sure-fire winner”). Not only did it win the Sustainable Restaurant’s Association ‘People’s Favourite’ award in 2016, but also backing from private equity impresario, Luke Johnson, with the aim of pushing its further expansion (there are 4 other branches in nearby towns).
2015: “Showing it can be done out in the sticks!” – this “buzzy” and “deservedly popular” local favourite wins significant all-round praise for its “stylish” looks and “reasonably priced” cooking. (Upbeat feedback too on its siblings in Harpenden and Hertford).
2014: Although it shares an aesthetic with “Prezzo/Café Rouge-type places”, this “fab, family-run fish restaurant” by the abbey stays “a cut above” the competition thanks to a “varied and imaginative” menu.
